KOF98 Ultimate Match (Review)

The latest Remake of KOF98 which is Highly Considered by Fans as the Best in KOF series. Like it’s previous DreamCast counter-part, KOF98UM also has “stage enhancements” by inserting “3D Objects” within the previous 2D Backgrounds. However, KOF98UM also comes with tons of other Features. This includes:

  • Extra Characters like Geese Howard, Mr.Big, Wolfgang Krauser, Orochi Shermie, Orochi Chris, Orochi Yashiro, Iori Leona, Orochi Iori, Goenitz, Omega Rugal, Orochi.
  • EX Characters, Empowered existing Characters with Skills from their previous series trademark. For example, EX Billy Kane will have his “Salamander Stream” move from Real Bout Fatal Fury. Hold [select] button whilst selecting the characters.
  • Customizable Color Change for Characters and their Aura’s.
  • Tweaked Damage Balance: Skill Damage Redefined, Play Harder & Survive Longer!
  • Enhanced CPU A.I: Battle with CPU’s have never been harder than this, they now know a lot more on how to Counter your attacks!
  • Several New Backgrounds: China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and some other
  • NeoGeo Mode: with this, you can play both the new and classic KOF98
  • There are 3 types of Power Gauge in Ultimate Match. Advanced, Extra and the Hybrid Ultimate Gauge which let’s players combine features from both previous gauges.

Some noticed changes in Characters Moves:

  • EX Geese’s “Jaei Ken” is in it’s Real Bout Fatal Fury style where he tosses his opponent if the move hits
  • Geese’s Deadly Rave linking-hits are now automated when launched.
  • EX Terry Bogard now has his “Power Wave” move from Real Bout Fatal Fury
  • Andy Bogard now has his “Geki Hishou Ken” from Real Bout Fatal Fury
  • EX Andy Bogard implemented with a 3 hit striking move
  • EX Mai’s Hissatsu Shinobi Bachi is in it’s Real Bout Fatal Fury style, she heads-up rather than striking forward

  • Every battle with special characters have it’s “regulation”, it is as follows:

Beginning from Stage 1 to 3, there is a total of 9 Fighters which represents your “chance”. To get the following characters, you must “finish” your opponents with with a Desperation Move or Super Desperation Move. This must be done Before stage 4:

  • Shingo Yabuki: 1 or 2 DM/SDM
  • Eiji Kisaragi or Kasumi Todoh: 3 DM/SDM upwards, but not more than 5
  • Orochi Leona or Orochi Iori: A minimum of 6 DM/SDM or a Straight Record
  • Rugal Bernstein: 8 DM/SDM
  • As for the 2nd Half stage, the DM/SDM Finisher must be done to opponents Before stage 6:

  • Iori Team, American Team or Master Team straight to Omega Rugal: 3 DM/SDM
  • 96 Boss Team straight to Goenitz: 3 DM/SDM, but not more than 5
  • Orochi Team straight to Orochi Yamanato: 6 DM/SDM or more
  • KOF98UM is also tested Playable on the PC using PCSX2. However, there are some minor Graphical Stage Graphic Glitches.

I’ve found a way to Greatly Speed-up KOF98UM on the PCSX2. It’s actually very easy. Just go to Game Option > Graphic Setting > Change Focus to “Normal”. Mind You, If the game turns out to be “Too Fast” then plz Turn Off All Speed-Hacks on the Emulator.

The default setting for Focus is “Soft”. This adds blurring to the Overall Graphics. In which situation decreases the games performance on the PC.
