Kings Bounty: The Legend (PC) [Express Review]

It’s very rare to hear or see Russian Developers making an anstounding videogame. But Kings Bounty: The Legend will change that perception. In Fact, it is evidently better than the popular game of the similar genre. At a glance, Kings Bounty looks A LOT like 4th Heroes of Might & Magic series. However, this game contains more depth than it’s outer looks. Although the game does not have building creation features, most of the other functions in this game will suck you deep inside the adventure.

The plot seems rather usual for a mythical adventure. But it has nice blend of modern influence especially when you’re talking to Lina the Ice Spirit, one of the weapons inside the Chest of Rage. The chest utilizes the hero’s anger in order to summon various weapon spirits to assist battle.

The graphics in KBTL is a very nice mix of 2D and 3D interface. Most of the Menu and character portraits are done in 2D in order to give a middle-age feeling to the game’s character as this is a game based on mythical legends. It just wouldn’t feel right if the portraits are done in 3D because it doesn’t have that cloudy mystical classic feel to it. Well, maybe it can be realised in a full featured CGI animation. But that’s just too costly for newcomers. The rest however, is done in rich animated 3D graphics as most other games are made today.

I really am lost of words to praise the game. It’s like this is everything a HoMM Fan would love. Except the part where you couldn’t create buildings. That wraps up my shortest game review ever. KBTL is priced at RM139. Read the rest of this entry »

A look at Windows 7 Public beta (Build 7000)

Finally finished my download and installed the Public Beta of Windows 7 Ultimate. I’m still using using the 32bit version as i felt it has the best compatibility with most programs. To try and make it simple and easy to understand, here are some of my highlights:

Setup: Same as Vista, just changed colors

Installation: Took me nearly 2 hours to finish Upgrade-Installation. But New Installation takes less than 1 hour

As the installation finishes, a new animated Windows Logo will appear during start-up. It gave me a feeling of a new start for the current windows. But just how good will it be?

Here are some screenshots of my early windows 7 usage:

The Orange Box (PC) [Express Review]

This collection doesn’t need further introduction. Simply said, it’s a bundle pack that contains all of Valve’s most popular games for the year 2008.

The Orange Box Contains:

  • Half-Life 2: Prologue
  • Half-Life 2: Episode 1
  • Half-Life 2: Episode 2
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Portal
  • FYI, if each game titles were bought seperately. It would cost RM55 to RM85 per title. Instead of tearing your wallet apart, Why not buy a full fledged collection Complete with Soundtrack and Limited Edition Team Fortress 2 Pins! One Helluva Deal.

Original Price in early release: RM179
    Current Retail price: RM150
    Price i bought from a forummer: RM110 *Cash-In SFX*

Bought this at Lowyat Forum Sales Section, Thanks to Hisham aka Ayyam for selling me this game at a Great Deal. To be frank, i simply bought this just to play Team Fortress 2. Half-Life 2 still makes my head dizzy.

Alone in the Dark 5 (PC) [Express Review]

The Fifth Alone in the Dark is packed with beautiful graphics and many innovations. The story is presented in an episodic TV series environment. However, the controls are clearly hindering the players experience. For example, you must enter the 1st person view in order to use a Pistol and Fire Extinguisher. To make things worse, the walking controls aren’t smooth. Everytime you make edward rotate his position, he will move a bit to the front of the direction you want him to rotate. Thus, making it hard for situations in narrow paths where you can easily fall. I dare to say the previous installment controls are much better and well balanced.

Graphics in AitD is quite heavy with all those fire and Havok physics effect running around most of the stage (Collapsing Building parts, Broken or Burned Chair, Wall Cracks, Broken Door, Burning Walls and Pillars). You will need a High-End Graphics card in order to play this in a well performed speed. My mid-range 3650XT can run it in High Detail, but the speed performance is somewhat a bit annoying with the slow response caused due to heavy graphics processing. Also, sharp pixellated textures can be noticed easily when not using a High-End GPU. Though it does not happen most of the time, it will probably ruin your gaming experience at a certain degree.

Enemies are quite challenging i’d say, you must hit them with a burning chair in order to defeat them for good. For bosses, you must throw and shoot cocktails to set them ablaze.

Aside from controls, the other issue which is most complained by gamers is the ending cutscene where both endings are siding to the evil. I won’t tell you what happened, search youtube.

As for the innovations, besides the 1st person view used to initiate certain items. You can also steal & drive cars, which has never been done in any other survival horror game.

If it wasn’t due to the bad controls, i’m quite sure most people would have enjoyed this even more. A sad revive for an already established title.

    Interactivity: 5/5
    Graphics: 4/5
    Sound: 4/5
    Controls: 3/5
    Presentation: 4/5

Money Spent: RM65 (2nd hand, Thanks Michael!)
Current Price: RM119 Read the rest of this entry »

    Currently Playing (6/1/08)

    PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket
At the moment, addicted playing the online multiplayer match of World in Conflict. I know, massive entertainment have been sold to ubisoft. But the online server is still up & functioning. So does this mean the next installment of WiC will handled by ubisoft? or will it be forever buried in sands of time?

It would be great if ubisoft somehow did bought the rights for WiC when they take Massive Entertainment with them? or did the rights remain with sierra? This puzzles me, but my bet is currently on the first. They may as well use the expertise to massively improve the gameplay for Tom Clancy’s EndWar. It’s logical right?

Also still playing Left 4 Dead. Especially the Versus Mode which will soon be updated with news maps and other features. I’m glad 2 of my friends have bought the legal version and i hope to continue convincing people to support original copies.
